Anise Seeds – Sweet Aroma and Versatile Use

Anise is sweet and highly aromatic, with a distinctive flavor that is hard to confuse with others. Its seeds, both whole and ground, are often used in preparing teas and infusions – either alone or combined with other aromatic herbs. Anise is popular in many regional and traditional sweets, such as black jelly beans, British aniseed balls, Italian pizzelle cookies, German Pfeffernüsse cookies, Austrian Anisbögen pastries, Dutch muisjes sprinkles, and New Mexican bizcochitos cookies.

Anise is also an important ingredient in beverages like Mexican atole de anís and champurrado (a hot chocolate-like drink). It is widely used as a digestive aid after meals in Pakistan and India. In ancient Rome, cakes flavored with anise, called "mustachoes," were served after feasts – a tradition that later became the basis for serving wedding cakes.
